Loving a pet means, at some point, facing one of the hardest decisions there is.

If you’re here, you may be asking,

“How will I know when it’s time?”

The truth is, there isn’t one perfect moment.

There is usually a window of time where saying goodbye becomes the kindest option. Some families choose a little earlier to prevent suffering. Others need more time. Both come from love. You know your pet best.

Our role is to help you think it through, answer your questions, and walk with you without pressure. When we talk about quality of life, we’re looking at comfort, mobility, appetite and hydration, moments of joy, and signs of anxiety or distress. Every pet is different, and every situation is different. If you’re unsure what you’re seeing at home, we’ll talk it through with you.

Euthanasia is a word that carries a lot of weight. Many people worry they are giving up or making the wrong decision. In reality, when used at the right time, euthanasia is a way to prevent suffering, not cause it. It allows your pet to pass peacefully, without fear, pain, or confusion, and it is one of the most compassionate choices we can make for them. Most families worry about doing this too soon, but what we often hear later is worry about waiting too long. Our goal is to help you find a space where your pet is still comfortable and their passing can be calm, peaceful, and surrounded by love.

At Delhomme Animal Clinic, euthanasia is performed in a quiet, private setting. We move slowly, we keep things calm, and we give you as much time as you need. Your pet will be made comfortable and relaxed before anything else happens, and when the time comes, they pass peacefully. For pets we know well, we may be able to help coordinate or discuss at-home options if that is the only appropriate choice.

Aftercare is handled through Pet Passages of Lafayette, who offer both private cremation with ashes returned and communal cremation, along with memorial options if you choose. You can decide on aftercare before or after your appointment. They will gently care for your pet after their passing, and if you choose to have ashes returned, they are typically ready within 7 to 10 days.

We are always happy to talk through costs ahead of time so you know what to expect. If your pet is in distress and we are unavailable, we recommend contacting Lafayette Animal Emergency Clinic at 206 Winchester Dr in Lafayette at 337-989-0992, where there is a team we trust to help in urgent situations.

It is truly an honor to care for your pets through every stage of their lives. We are grateful to have known them, and to have been trusted by you. This is not just a medical decision, it is a deeply personal one. Whether you are just starting to think about it or you know the time is near, we are here to talk, to listen, and to help you make the decision that feels right.

Call us anytime. We will walk through it with you.

Delhomme has always been there for my pets needs/illnesses. They are thorough and very kind. Felix loves these ladies!
